Didirri - Often Broken

This is one of the most personal projects I've ever dived into. The poignant lyrics of Often Broken stirred memories of heartbreak, shattered families, and broken trust. I sifted through archival footage of my childhood, remembering the gorgeous Pool our family had made. It represents a time full of love and laughter and what it has become - a beautiful wreck, bruised but still in its own way alive. I chose to shoot on 16mm to immortalise this moment, our childhood living on Tape, and this moment in time captured and living on film felt like a way I could store what is indispensable to me in the physical. Being such a personal project, I have been lucky to have Didirri trust me with these three music videos, finalising in this, my most personal piece yet.

This is for and Starring, my dear mother.

Didirri -

“In the Often Broken music video, we explored a mother/son relationship in an empty nest. We looked at all of the representations of past joy in an empty house.

Acceptance of joyful memories as only memories. Past joy, not present pain. Maite (who stars in the clip) let us film on location in her house, Maite gave so much of herself to the clip, and I am so very grateful. There were high emotions throughout the shoot, and I was brought to tears by her performance multiple times.
The pool in her backyard used to be the centre point of a joyful community, now abandoned. While it is no longer bustling, it will always hold misty-eyed memories of splashing and laughter. When it is time to move on, sometimes you need a guiding hand and a gentle reminder to make new memories and not only cling to the old ones. Director Jesse Leaman also included his own family pool-side camcorder footage for the intro audio and outro sequence.”
